Choosing Interim Sample Sizes in Group Sequential Designs

This manuscript investigates sample sizes for interim analyses in group sequential designs. Traditional designs (GSD) rely on “information fraction” arguments to define the sizes. Then, maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) are used decide whether stop early or continue data collection until next analysis. The possibility of stopping changes distribution and final MLEs: possible decisions trial excludes some space elements. At each analysis an MLE is a mixture truncated untruncated distributions. distributional form becomes more complicated with additional Test statistics that asymptotically normal without possibly stopping, become mixtures distributions under local alternatives. Stage-specific information ratios equivalent size independent identically distributed data. equivalence justify GSDs. Because stage-specific derived from normally differ those non-normally data, former invalid when there stopping.
